The coins of Emperor Antoninus Pius (reigned 138–161 AD) depicting Britain are among the most famous in Roman numismatics.
They were issued to commemorate the victories of Roman troops in Britain under Quintus Lollius Urbicus and the construction of the Antonine Wall, a defensive line in the north of modern Scotland.
This type of coin is officially recognized as the prototype of the design of the modern British penny due to the depiction on the reverse of a female figure, as the personification of Britain, sitting on the rocks to the left.
